One click, your campus: As one of the first state higher education institutions in Germany, THWS is offering online degree programmes
A degree programme that adapts to individual circumstances and not the other way round: This is made possible from winter semester 2025/26 at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS). As one of the first state higher education institutions in Germany, THWS will offer online full-time degree programmes that can be be completed entirely online. President Professor Dr. Jean Meyer: "With our online degree programme, we are creating the opportunity to make education accessible in a flexible way and from anywhere, which meets the current needs of many prospective students."
Applications are possible from 1 May 2025 for the new online bachelor's degree programmes Software Engineering (B.Eng.) and Health and Environmental Psychology (B.Sc.). Studies start on 1 October 2025 and take place 100 percent online. The exams can also be taken completely online. For more information, please see online.thws.de.
Two more online degree programmes are already being planned: The German-taught master's programme Geo Data Technology commences in summer semester 2026. The English-taught bachelor's degree programme Engineering Science starts in winter semester 2026/27.
At whom are the online degree programmes at THWS directed?
The THWS online degree programmes comprise live sessions and asynchronous teaching units. These include, for example, interactive scripts and learning videos that students can work on regardless of the time of day.
The online degree programmes are aimed at career changers or professionals, but also at high school graduates who are looking for a practice-oriented degree programme with maximum flexibility. International talents who are resident outside Germany can also apply for an online degree programme. The only requirements are a laptop or computer and a stable internet connection.
Software Engineering (B.Eng.): Shaping a digital future
This online bachelor's degree programme prepares students specifically for the development of high-quality, sustainable software solutions. With this degree programme, people with an affinity for IT are ideally equipped for a career in this sector and can contribute to a sustainable and technologically advanced future.
Health and Environmental Psychology (B.Sc.)
The English-taught online bachelor's degree programme in Health and Environmental Psychology focuses on psychology at the interface of environment and health. In this programme, students develop practice-oriented skills in the areas of counselling, behavioural analysis, and intervention planning.
Application from 1 May
Applications for online studies are possible via the THWS CampusPortal between 1 May and 15 July. The degree programmes start on 1 October 2025. A few days before the start of the semester, an online networking event will take place where students can get to know professors and their fellow students. Further networking events will be organised during the semester. This ensures that students are involved in an active community with their fellow students even without physical contact.
Studying at THWS
At THWS, quality is the centre piece. For over 50 years, students have benefited from the excellent study conditions at one of the largest state higher education institutions in Bavaria, Germany. The THWS online degree programmes will also meet this quality standard in future. As in the on-site degree programmes, there is a great deal of practical contents instead of pure theory, combining application-oriented research with local expertise and a global perspective. THWS President Professor Dr. Meyer adds: "With this initiative, we are setting new standards for the accessibility and attractiveness of our study programmes."
